While the name StudioK may sound new, we have been around longer than you think.
In 1987, Kalen Henderson purchased Griffin Photography, a professional photography studio located southeast of Mt. Pleasant on the Airport Road. Moving the business to her home then on Pine St., in Mt. Pleasant, the business expanded as the family moved to a home on Corry West Court, then outgrowing that space as the Henderson family built on an addition to that home to house the photography studio.
As the Henderson children grew, so did the business as Henderson Photography, Inc., moved from being a home-based studio to a location on Monroe Street, sharing space with the Subway restaurant. Needing still more space, Henderson moved the business to Jefferson Street where it remained until the three Henderson kids all graduated from high school. In the fall of 2006, with three children all in college in three different states, Kalen decided it was time to take a "break" from the studio and accepted offers to teach photography and also to travel and photograph extensively throughout the U.S., Canada, South Korea, Europe, Australia and even South Africa.
Thousands of frequent flyer miles later and at the urging of family and friends, Kalen returned to the studio, opening StudioK in a remodeled lumber yard in her hometown of Danville. While helping to take care of her parents - who lived in Danville - Kalen began her second studio career in 2010.
A short two years later, Kalen and her husband, Mike, began to realize the dream of opening a winery in the countryside just outside of Mt. Pleasant and, when space became available, she picked up the studio and moved it to its current location on the grounds of Airport Road Vineyard and Winery at 2555 Lexington Ave., just south of the Mt. Pleasant Airport and less than one quarter of a mile from the original Griffin Photography location where it had all begun some 27 years prior.
Joining her in 2010 was Kate Ridinger, a psychology-graduate-turned-digital-artist, who had worked for Kalen while in high school and throughout college. Together they determined that StudioK would be a fun, affordable photographic experience and that solid customer service and great photography would be the goal. That fuels StudioK today and will continue to do so.
